Converting between virtual and physical machines as well as different versions of virtual platform can introduce all kinds of headaches, primarily as a result of the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer).

However, a quick and easy approach if your image happens to be Windows Server 2008 R2 is to simple set the boot flag to automatically detect the HAL on bot via MSCONFIG:
